FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a simple way to transfer files from your computer to ours using the internet.
Instructions
- Download free FTP client software. For Mac users we recommend using Fetch for PC users we recommend Smart FTP. Please visit our Lab Downloads page if you need software.
- Create a folder on your desktop labeled with your name and the date.
- Within this folder create sub folders labeled with print size, quantity and border type and place the corresponding images into these folders. Use separate folders for prints on true black and white paper and prints on color paper.
- Include a text file with your name, e mail address, phone number and printing instructions (size, paper surface, quantities...)
- Drag and drop this folder into the ftp.
- A Photoworks representative will email you within 24 hours with a turn around time. If your order is needed right away rush service is available. Please call our store to alert us to your rush order. 415.626.6800.
FTP Settings:
Host Name: ftp.photoworkssf.com
User Name: photoworkssf
Password: upload
For security reasons, you do not have full access to this ftp folder. Once you drop your order into the ftp only Photoworks will be able to view, access the files and delete them.
If you would like your own private ftp folder with full access privileges please email a password to heather@photoworkssf.com and she will set you up with one. This is definitely recommended for photographers who regularly ftp and/or have large orders keep in mind that you will have to email us to alert us to orders in your private account.
Tips
- Your transfer will be faster if you convert your files to jpgs. Our color machines print at 400 dpi at the size requested and our bw machine prints at 300 dpi. Any files larger than this will be compressed. Anything smaller will interpolate. To save transfer time, you can also zip your files using a program like stuffit.
- Important: Avoid illegal characters such as colons in your folder and file names. Use underscores or periods instead.
- Be sure to create your folders on your desktop and then to drag them into your ftp client software. Do not attempt to create folders within your software, as it will not work properly.
- For closer accuracy on color prints use our color profile sRGB IEC61966-2.1. It is a common profile that can be found in most versions of Photoshop or can be our downloaded from our Lab Downloads page. (For Giclee prints use the AdobeRGB 98 color profile.) If you have color corrected your files using our profile please say "no corrections" in your text file. Otherwise we will correct them at our discretion.
- For prints on true black and white paper it is better to leave these as unconverted color files and let us convert them to grayscale when printing. This generally produces the best results. Feel free to tell us you like good contrast, medium contrast, etc. in your text file. You can convert them to grayscale yourself but be aware that this can increase the chance of blocked up highlights and loss of detail when printing.
